Winter Solstice Lunar Eclipse, 2010

Early this morning the Earth passed between the Moon and the sun, causing a full lunar eclipse. Today also marks the winter solstice : the shortest day of the year.
This eclipse was the first to fall on the winter solstice since 1638. The next solstice eclipse won’t be until 2094.

There was a perfectly clear sky over Belfast so I had an unobstructed view of the full event from the fourth floor window of my work building. As I walked in to work in temperatures of around -13ºC I didn’t miss the decision not to bring my tripod with me – I already had a rucksack and a camera bag with me.
